Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a windstorm inspection?
To take advantage of discounts that you are allowed! One study showed that an average of 18% of Florida homeowners were eligible for discounts and were not receiving them!
The State of Florida passed Statute 626.0629 which requires insurance companies to offer discounts and credits for construction features that reduce damage from windstorms (such as shutters and impact windows, correct tie-down of your trusses to the walls, etc.)
What does the windstorm inspection entail?
The inspection takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. The inspector will walk around the outside of your home to verify your hurricane resistant features and then will need access into your attic to look at the underside of your roof to see the materials used and how it is attached to your home. If you have hurricane shutters that store in the garage, he will need to take a look at them for verification purposes – you do not need to put them up (unless required by your insurance company).
After the inspection is complete, the inspector will complete the required form and go over it with you. He will gladly answer any questions you may as well as give you recommendations for making your home more windstorm safe.
How much can I expect to save?
The size of your discount depends on how many wind-resistant features your home has. Most homes have code-approved construction, so even without shutters or impact windows your home may receive a meaningful discount.
Homes with many of wind resistant features that insurance companies are looking for could potentially save up to 40% off the windstorm premium of the policy.

How long does it take to receive my credits?
The insurance company takes about 3 weeks to get back to you, the insured. You then take the discount letter back to your agency and finalize your policy for the next year. Be sure to give your mortgage lender the new insurance amount so they may correctly figure your escrow.
